Find Balance Through Naturopathic Medicine

(Part of the “Why Naturopathic Medicine?” Series)

Naturopathic medicine is a whole-person approach to healthcare that focuses on prevention, treatment, and helping you live in a state of optimal health. Instead of just quieting symptoms, it asks: Why is this happening? And then it works to address those root causes so your body can return to what it’s designed to do naturally — find balance.

Here’s how naturopathic medicine stands apart:

Individualized Care

Your life, history, and health aren’t like anyone else’s — so your care shouldn’t be either. Naturopathic doctors (NDs) tailor treatment plans to your specific health concerns and goals.

Root-Cause Focus

Symptoms are the smoke; NDs look for the fire. That means exploring lifestyle, nutrition, stress, environment, and even genetics to uncover what’s driving the problem.

Prevention as a Priority

It’s not just about getting well — it’s about staying well. NDs work with you to build habits, manage stress, and catch potential issues early.

A Holistic View

Mind, body, and spirit aren’t separate compartments. Naturopathic medicine considers the whole picture and supports the body’s natural healing processes.

Natural Therapies — Backed by Science

From herbal medicine and targeted nutrition to acupuncture, hydrotherapy, and lifestyle coaching, NDs use a range of natural treatments — always considering safety, evidence, and your unique needs.

Education and Empowerment

Your health journey isn’t a spectator sport. NDs make sure you understand your body and your options so you can take an active role in your care.

Collaborating With Conventional Medicine

It’s not either/or. NDs often work alongside other healthcare providers to integrate natural and conventional therapies for the best possible outcomes.

By looking beyond symptoms and focusing on long-term wellness, naturopathic medicine offers a different way forward — one that supports vitality, resilience, and your body’s built-in ability to heal.

In Colorado, Naturopathic Doctors are registered through the state. To register, they must:

  • Graduate from a four-year, post-graduate, accredited naturopathic medical school.

  • Pass the national NPLEX board exams.

  • Complete coursework that mirrors the first two years of conventional medical school — including anatomy, physiology, chemistry, and 80 hours of pharmacology taught by pharmacists. (Yes, they understand how medications affect your systems, their side effects, and how they interact with herbs and supplements.)

Joy Maples is the Executive Director of the Colorado Association of Naturuopathic Doctors . She’s not a doctor of any kind and faints at the sight of blood. But she’s one heck of an administrator.

As Executive Director, she’s a bridge builder. She is the one working to make naturopathic medicine visible, understandable, and useful to people who’ve only known the mainstream healthcare system, which we all agree is stressed.

“I’m a patient, a professional, and an advocate who is working to make naturopathic medicine a viable option for preventative care in Colorado’s healthcare landscape.”
