The Doctor Said So

Prebiotic and Probiotic Intro

We live in a mutualistic relationship with our good gut bacteria. They receive nutrients from our food to survive and as a result of them surviving we benefit from immune system balance. Prebiotics are non-digestible carbohydrates that act as food for probiotics.2 It turns out that foods high in polysaccharide content are some of the best to suit that purpose. Foods high in polysaccharides include apples, cucumbers with the skin on, carrots, and squash. In addition to feeding your current residential bacteria, there are a number of bacterial strains you can take in the form of probiotics that can be helpful for different healthcare complaints. For example, consumption of Saccharmoyces boulardii may be indicated in patients with irritable bowel disease. The internationally endorsed definition of probiotics is live microorganisms that, when administered in adequate amounts, confer a health benefit on the host.1 As always, see your healthcare provider before making any changes in your healthcare regimen.
